D'Arcy Short, the talented Mitakoodi batting all-rounder, has signed a two-year contract with the Adelaide Strikers, bidding farewell to his long-term stint with the Hobart Hurricanes. After an impressive six seasons and 82 games with the 'Canes, Short expressed his excitement about the new opportunity with the Strikers, who finished seventh in BBL|12 with a 5-9 record. The hard-hitting left-handed batter and left-arm wrist spin bowler is looking forward to showcasing his skills at the iconic Adelaide Oval in front of enthusiastic crowds.
During his time with the Hurricanes, Short displayed consistent performances, averaging 37.06 with the bat and developing into a useful limited-overs leg-spinner. Alongside his 2706 runs, he also contributed with the ball, taking 34 wickets at an average of 36.71, with his best bowling figures being 5-21. However, it was his dominating batting performances that earned him back-to-back Player of the Tournament awards in BBL|07 and BBL|08. In BBL|07, he stood out with a remarkable top score of 122* (69) and an impressive 26 sixes, leading the charts with 572 runs.
Now, Short departs the Hobart Hurricanes as the competition's fourth-highest run-scorer of all time, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances. Expressing his gratitude for his time with the 'Canes, he cherished the friendships and memories formed during his tenure there.
Adelaide Strikers coach, Jason Gillespie, himself one of only two Indigenous men to have played test cricket for Australia, expressed his delight at adding a player of Short's caliber to the Strikers' lineup. He praised Short as a strong T20 player with invaluable Australian experience and highlighted his power-hitting abilities along with his valuable bowling contributions.
Short's move to the Strikers marks the second Indigenous cricketer leaving Hobart for another franchise ahead of BBL|13, with Scott Boland returning to his hometown Melbourne Stars. The upcoming season commences on December 7, with the Brisbane Heat hosting the Stars. Short will have his first opportunity to shine as a Striker two days later when Adelaide hosts Brisbane at the renowned Adelaide Oval.
